The Tax Manager position is responsible for supporting the Director of Tax with managing State Tobacco Tax Reporting for our US distribution company, B2C ecommerce business (remote seller) and US Retail Tobacco shops; and State Sales Tax Reporting for our B2C ecommerce business and US Retail entities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties will be assigned
State Sales Tax and Tobacco Tax Reporting
We're leading the way within our industry as a technology-enabled US Distributor providing value through digitization, automation and increased efficiencies; made possible by equipping our employees and external business partners to succeed in a world where transactions are faster, more complicated and require a deeper level of sophistication.
- Our US distribution company utilizes SAP and has RICEFs to generate State tobacco tax reports. Our B2C ecommerce business utilizes IGEN software to generate State tobacco tax reports and IGEN / SOVOS to generate State sales tax reports. Our US Retail stores utilize AVALARA software to generate NY State and NYC tobacco tax reports and NYS Sales tax reports.
- With information of the state tobacco tax regulation and with the knowledge of our product profile, you will be required to run tax reports, identify errors and determine cause of any inconsistency. Once verified as accurate, the tax information is to be filed via the state tax portal(s).
- In identifying consistent errors and the cause of inconsistency, you will work directly with the software provider to determine solutions to ensure reliability of reports.
- Participate on monthly industry calls with Industry legal counsel and tax advocate who works directly with Federation of Tax Administrators (FTA) to learn of current developments for remote sellers of our product.
- Share in the preparation and /or perform the monthly review of the Accounting and Excise Tax Associate state tobacco tax returns; and state sales tax returns for remote sales.
US Retail upgraded the POS system and completed the implementation of AVALARA in Q4 of 2024.
- Actively participate with implementation team of new B2C Retail software. Work side-by side with Director of Tax to implement remaining changes with Avalara for Sales tax and tobacco tax. Prepare necessary documentation to define tax basis; to solidify understanding for employees and consultants, and to institutionalize for future requirements which may include changes in tax regulations including any additions of a tax cap.
- Responsible for annual Tangible Personal Property Tax Reporting.
- Keeps up to date on information and technology affecting functional area(s) to increase innovation and ensure compliance.
- Uphold Code of Ethics. Build and maintain trust of internal and external stakeholders. Very hands on, with ability to delegate. Flexible, mature team-player with the ability to make decisive decisions.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Acute understanding of business process flows and related internal controls.
- Intermediate working knowledge of Excel, using functions VLOOKUP , PivotTable, etc.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting with at least 5 years of experience in accounting / tax compliance with a public accounting firm, a state tax department and/or a US company.
- Minimum 5 years of experience with progressively increasing responsibilities.
- Industry experience a plus, but not required.
- Experience with SAP, Avalara and/or another 3rd party excise tax software provider.
